UTM parameters tell analytics software how a visitor reached a page. They are most useful when the same campaign is named the same way everywhere. Inconsistent capitalization, different spellings, and ad-hoc source values turn one campaign into several reporting rows.
Use the three core fields every time
For manual campaign links, use utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign together. Google Analytics uses these values to report where campaign traffic came from.
- Source: the specific referrer or platform, such as
linkedin, newsletter, orpartner_name. - Medium: the channel type, such as
email,paid_social,cpc, orreferral. - Campaign: the shared marketing initiative, such as
spring_launchor2026_service_promo.
Use utm_content to distinguish versions of creative within the same campaign, such as hero_button and footer_button. Use utm_term for paid keyword-level identification when that is part of the campaign plan.
Choose conventions before creating links
Pick a case format and separator, then document it. Lowercase snake case is one simple option: utm_source=linkedin and utm_campaign=fall_site_audit. The exact style matters less than using it consistently.
Keep a small source and medium dictionary. For example, decide whether the source is facebook or meta; do not use both for the same platform. Decide whether paid social uses paid_social or social_paid; do not alternate between them.
Keep existing URL parameters intact
A campaign URL may already contain useful query parameters. Add the UTM parameters without deleting the existing ones. Before sending the link, test it in a browser and verify that the page loads and any conversion or booking flow still works.
A practical example
https://example.com/services/?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=fall_site_audit&utm_content=carousel_1
This identifies the platform, the channel, the campaign, and the exact creative without making the link impossible to understand later.
Use the UTM Campaign URL Builder to make individual or bulk links, preserve existing parameters, and download a CSV for campaign QA.
